The Boy I Thought I Knew

The boy I thought I knew
Lives in Salt Lake City, Utah
More than distance separates us

He is in high school
I've finished university
He is sixteen; I am twenty-four
Different worlds/different lives
But we both thought we knew the other

Recognition
Impossible recognition

One national border
Two scholastic degrees
Eight years
Over a thousand miles

And still when I said
Have we met? I feel like I know you...

He didn't roll his eyes like I was feeding him a line
I don't think we could have but I know what you mean

And so I want to know

If a chaotic stalker from San Francisco
A cute blonde dancer from Santa Rosa
A globetrotting Australian
Two or three people in Europe
A warehouse worker-cum-lawyer
An angel of music of Armenian descent
A politician-to-be in Victoria
Can love me,

Could the boy I thought I knew?
